ARTIST STATEMENT

As a retired high school art teacher, I’ve embraced the freedom to delve deeper into my  passion for creating art. My artistic exploration now spans two distinct yet captivating  mediums, paint and wool. These mediums, with their contrasting textures and techniques,  offer me a rich canvas for artistic expression.

In my abstract work I find joy in playing with color, shape, pattern and movement. My  representational work features traditional still life and landscape. During the Pandemic, my  grand daughters became my muses . Their art and writing incorporated into my portraits of  them has been a delightful collaboration.

The act of wool felting with its tactile and meditative qualities is a very satisfying process.  Lately my artistic journey has led me to a fascinating intersection where these two mediums  converge. I’m exploring innovative ways to combine painting and wool sculpting, blending  colors and form to create hybrid works that blur the boundaries between painting and  sculpture.

Portfolio

  • Representational

My work often captures domestic subject matter with a blend of imaginary images, heightened color and expressive mark making.

  • Abstract

My abstract work is a combination of control and impulse. I often start with a grid and plan for color, but expressive marks complete the piece, creating a compelling interplay between structured planning and spontaneous creativity.

  • Sculptural

My wool felting work is both representational and abstract with color shape, pattern and movement integral to each piece. Similar to my painted work, strong color contrasts play a significant role. The art of felting wool is inherently meditative, providing a soothing antidote to this busy world.
